Wildfires are now a severe issue for California, and for Southern California, this year has been especially challenging. In the middle of this Sony Group Corporation has come out with a $5 million cheque for emergency and recovery. This kind gesture highlights Sony’s stewardship to its community and more so, its entertainment arm which has been operating from Los Angeles for over three and half decades.
Los Angeles is not a city but a creative platform, an innovation point, and a place for uniting communities, which is very close to Sony. Its $5 million donation is to be directed to frontline-supporting groups, ranging from emergency services and community-sustaining groups and employee-supporting companies.
During the latest CES press conference, both Kenichiro Yoshida, the Chairman, and CEO of Sony Group Corporation, and Hiroki Totoki, the President and COO, reminded the audience that it is high time for the company to return the favor to society that has been supporting the business for decades.
Sony isn’t the only company stepping up. The entertainment industry and other corporate giants have rallied to support wildfire relief efforts:
The Recording Academy and MusiCares also initiated the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort and committed $1 million for aid for the affected music persons by the wildfires.
This is not the first time that Sony has been generous. In April 2020, they founded a $100 million Global Relief Fund to fight COVID-19, targeting the healthcare, education, and creative industries. Besides, following the tragedy hit by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011, Sony, together with its employees donated about 1 billion yen ($ 12.2 million) towards disaster relief.
To understand the gravity of the situation, here are some alarming statistics about California wildfires:
This is not the only value that Sony’s donation represents. It points out how companies are vital in the disaster response process. Sony is a true model of what corporate responsibility would be by providing support to local organizations and efforts.
People do not scare words but they are most uncomfortable and panic during an emergency whether medical or fire related or whatever. That $5 million given by Sony is a ray of sunlight for the people, who suffered because of the wildfires in Southern California. They have proved they are a community that is willing to work towards rebuilding and show the entertainment industry together we can.
Here’s to Sony for trying and here’s to hoping that their largesse is contagious. Anyway, it’s been proven that when one community and a corporation come together, there is no problem that cannot be solved.
